    Uruguay's National Ports Authority (ANP) has extended from May 9 to August 8 the deadline for bids to be received for a 30-year BOT concession associated with the proposed multipurpose terminal at the port of Montevideo. 

  • Dalian invests

    The port of Dalian is to double capacity investing US$1.45bn in the next five years having already invested US$143m on box handling facilities. Dalian Container Terminal and Dalian Dagang Container Terminal handled a combined 1.3m TEU in 2002, the 13% boost in throughput effectively pushing the terminal to saturation point. 

  • APL seeking Chinese terminal investments

    APL has revealed that it is in discussions with two Chinese container terminals with a view to taking an equity stake. 

  • Lazaro Cardenas box terminal out to concession

    Francisco Lopez Barredo has been awarded the concession to operate the Terminal Especializada de Contenedores box handling facility at the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas. His bid included investment of US$7m compared with US$6.97m offered by ICAVE, US$4.41m by P&O Ports and US$3.86m by the Intercom consortium.

  • Kingston Signs Zim and Builds

    Fast track construction plans for the fourth phase of the Kingston Container Terminal are underway and the Port Authority of Jamaica has just signed a new five-year agreement with its number one customer Zim Israel. 

  • Tangier signed-up

    The construction contract for the first phase of the new commercial port for Tangiers, Morocco, has been signed between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Bymaro, subsidiaries of the Bouygues construction group, and the Special Tangiers Mediterranean Agency. 

  • Visakha terminal in June "soft opening"

    The joint venture between United Liner Agencies and Dubai Ports Authority was to commence operations at the newly built Visakha Container Terminal (VCT) in June. 

  • Maersk Sealand labels St Petersburg Europe's most expensive port

    Elena Siems, Maersk Sealand general manager, noted recently that, "St Petersburg is the most expensive port in the whole of Europe." 

  • Karachi has new container terminal

    The International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank, has loaned US$9.25m to the Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT) project in Karachi which is being developed as part of a 21-year concession. 

  • Panama posts big first quarter numbers

    Panama's three container terminals, Manzanillo, Colon and Balboa which account for 97% of total traffic, registered a 14.3% first quarter growth in containers handled.

    The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which saw its Asian cargo volumes increase by 23% in 2002, has signed an agreement with the Panama Canal Authority to jointly promote the benefits of using the allwater route via the canal. 

  • Andean inland project gets go-ahead

    Chile's Public Works Ministry has given the goahead for the construction of a new dry port high in the Andes at Los Andes, a central border crossing with Argentina. The concession for the terminal is for 25 years with investment of US$10-16m forecast. 

  • Scott Wilson appointed for Colombo expansion

    The Ministry of Port Development and Shipping in Colombo has signed a US$ 10 million contract with British consultant Scott Wilson to realise plans for the development of the Port of Colombo over the next 20 years. 

  • Colombo recovers transhipment traffic

    A series of tariff initiatives, more aggressive marketing and improvement in productivity are allowing Colombo to recover transhipment traffic lost to other regional competitors. 

  • Cochin Concession Talks

    The long talked about new container terminal concession in Cochin, India, is the focus of interest on the part of CSX World Terminals and APM Terminals, sister company of Maersk Sealand. 

  • Dole's Ecuador banana port up to 60% of capacity

    According to Juan Carlos Alferez, manager of Dole Ecuador's new private port, near Guayaquil, throughput of mainly export bananas has pushed the facility up to 60% of capacity. However, Dole is not the only customer with several other banana exporters channelling produce through the private port along with a handful of shipping lines and private sector import/ export companies.

  • TTS trailer trestles promise manpower savings

    Gothenburg-based TTS Ships Equipment, the ro-ro access equipment developer, has unveiled a new design of ro-ro trailer trestle with a built in cargo-lashing system. 

  • Acajutla doubles throughput

    Following 12 months of upgrading work El Salvador's main box terminal at the port of Acajutla forecasts throughput rising to 50,000TEU in 2003 compared to 41,000TEU the year before and just 12,000TEU in 2001. The traffic increase is the result of the introduction of a private operator raising productivity from eight moves-per-crane-hour to 22 moves, with 32 moves achieved on occasions. 

  • El Ferrol to host major coal terminal

    Spanish power generating company Endesa Generacion has ratified an agreement with the port authority of El Ferrol in northwest Spain to build a major coal importing terminal on a 106,000 sq m site in the outer harbour development zone. It has also guaranteed a minimum annual cargo of 3.5m tonnes although it anticipates handling at least 5m tonnes annually by 2006. In 2003 alone the company imported 3m tonnes of coal through the port. 

  • Kalmar's new Smartpath

    Kalmar has introduced a new generation of Smartpath, its container position verification system originally developed for straddle carriers. The company claims the technology can now be adapted for implementation on a range of handling equipment helping operators to improve productivity and cost-efficiency.

  • Genoa latest to institute CSI

    Genoa has become the 14th member port of the Container Security Initiative (CSI). It joins Rotterdam, Le Havre, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Singapore, Yokohama, Hong Kong, Gothenberg, Felixstowe, Vancouver, Montreal, and Halifax in the US-led scheme. 

  • South Africans progressing ports legislation

    Additional clauses have been inserted into South Africa's National Ports Authority Bill enabling Public Enterprises minister Jeff Radebe to direct state holding company Transnet to speed up the privatisation of its ports division if he detects any signs of deliberate foot dragging. Transnet currently generates much of its profit from the ports and is thought to be reluctant to lose them.

  • Mazda switches distribution from Antwerp to Barcelona

    The Japanese car maker Mazda has moved its Southern Europe distribution hub from Antwerp to Barcelona, where it will make use of Barcelona Autoterminal. The move was prompted by better value added services and good customs clearance. Vehicles will be shipped in from the US, Thailand and Japan on either weekly or ten-day schedules and rotated out to Spain, Portugal and France by rail and road and to Italy by short-sea shipping to the ports of Genova, Salerno and Palermo. 

  • Beirut aims to crack Iraqi humanitarian market

    The UN's World Food Programme is currently making use of six Middle East ports to direct relief aid through to Iraq. Lebanon has recently joined Syria, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey and Iran after agreeing to cut several port tariffs at Beirut by 50% and abolish others completely.
