Neglecting a joined-up strategy
01 Nov 2004
The high rates of port expansion currently written about the ports of China during these boom years prompts people to think: why shouldn't one of the new dragons supplant North East Asia's traditional hub port Busan. That fine location, which resembles Hong Kong in certain respects in that it is ringed by hills, lacks frontage and is liable to be hit by tempestuous winds, carries about 70% of Korea's containerised goods and is handily placed for Japan and other local markets.

Liebherr's reachstacker rationale
01 Nov 2004
Liebherr has been explaining the rationale behind its new LRS645 'banana boom' reachstacker. "When LiebherrWerk Nenzing decided to enter the reachstacker market some three years ago, " says the company, "there were plenty of suppliers offering rather similar models which could fulfil almost the same jobs, i. e. reach containers at a certain height and row and stack these boxes onto a defined location at another place. The main difference - if any could be found - was the price. Knowing that Liebherr is globally well known for its high quality products - and that quality has its price - the goal was as clear as it was difficult: The Liebherr reachstacker would have to come out with some unique features which would score in an almost saturated market."

CUSTOMERS WANT LEASING OPTION
01 Nov 2004
Dirk Groth says in the past the trend was to buy secondhand equipment but customers are now asking for the option of leasing which can be expensive, depending on country and/or the client, as banks and leasing companies have their own differing risk assessments for this country or that borrower. But with the appeal of off-balance sheet financing, many customers are more interested in leasing which of course increases the supplier's potential buy-back commitments. In the US, over 50% of all equipment is leased anyway, says Dennis Connors. Bernt Eriksson says most of Kalmar's machines are sold but are also available for short-term rental for peaking or back-up situations. Long term leasing is not common however due to the technical risks involved.
