Dutch court rejects Maasvlakte 2
01 Mar 2005
The highest Dutch administrative court rejected the €2.6 billion Maasvlakte 2 project to expand the port of Rotterdam, due to insufficient measures to protect the environment.
The project, to be funded by the government and the municipality of Rotterdam, aims to expand the port's existing 10,000ha by 10% via land reclamation by 2010. The court, which tests laws and approves government projects, said it could not give the green light to the expansion plan because of environmental worries, a port spokesman said.
