RSPB swoops on Bathside
01 Sep 2005
The UK government's go-ahead for a deepsea container port at London Gateway (Shellhaven) on the Thames should mean that Bathside Bay is reprieved, the RSPB says.
An application to build another new port at Bathside Bay, near Harwich, is still being considered but if London Gateway is finally given the green light, the UK will not need a port at Bathside, the RSPB believes. Bathside Bay is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA) under EU law because of its importance to wild birds.
