New Zealand “super port” mooted

Merger talks between various New Zealand ports and the frequently-stated desire of shipping companies to rationalise local port calls, is creating increasing interest in the idea of one “super port”for all global container trade. Establishing such a world-class facility would consequently enable larger vessels than the 4,100 teu currently seen in the country to achieve faster and more efficient turnarounds.

Containers would consequently be moved to and from the super port and other destinations around the country  through a combination of rail and coastal shipping.

The geographic positioning of New Zealand to the rest of the world and the existing port infrastructure in the North Island, suggest Auckland, Tauranga or possibly Northland would be the best site for such a facility.

With merger talks currently under way between the ports of Auckland and Tauranga, and also Lyttelton and Port Chalmers, the mood appears to exist for greater inter-port collaboration than ever before. As well as appealing to the shipping companies themselves who are increasingly building larger ships, major New Zealand shippers appear to be in favour of the apparent time and cost savings offered by the concept. Conversely, however, sceptics question whether the country generates sufficient trade to actually fill the larger vessel calls being mooted.
