Bulk Handling Quick Erection Storage Buildings

More than just a structure

The Rubb team considers all the relevant factors when planning a new project, as illustrated in the recent design and construction of a new warehouse for Sprague Energy, says spokesman Ian Patterson.

Located along Portland, Maine’s waterfront, Sprague’s new climate-controlled warehouse at the Merrill Marine Terminal is the port’s seventh Rubb structure.

Used primarily for conditioning high-quality newsprint, the 5,000 square metre intermodal facility is equipped with an array of doors, dock seals, dock levellers, rail canopies and candle lighting system.

The 52 x 98 metres BVE range structure is fitted with a sophisticated air turnover and environmental control system.Designed and integrated by Protec, the system’s capabilities include a 2m Btu heater system working with a dehumidification system that delivers 4,500 cu ft of dry air per minute.

Its overall function is to heat the building automatically as required, to maintain the interior environment with no condensation on stored product or building surfaces year round, and also to control carbon monoxide levels when vehicles operate within the structure.

“Major benefits of Rubb structures are their speed of delivery, erection and complete relocatability or extension at any time,”says Mr Patterson.“This portability provides several advantages over conventional structures and allows for a quick response to changing circumstances.Because Rubb products are so easy to deploy or relocate, an investment in a Rubb structure should never be thought of in the conventional terms of ‘fixed assets’. Rubb buildings are often resold and put to an entirely different use elsewhere in the world.”

However, Collinson points out that temporary can also become permanent, as evidenced in many ports.

“Steel-framed buildings with heavy-duty tensioned PVC covers are generally regarded as providing fast, low-cost storage facilities; however, they are often unjustly classified as ‘temporary’,” says Amanda Clarkson, marketing manager of Collinson.“Whilst they can be dismantled and relocated, in practice these buildings are more frequently utilised as permanent structures.” BestHall buildings with the original membrane are still in use after 30 years, which is comparable to the lifespan of sheet steel for cladding conventional portal frame buildings, says Ms Clarkson.
