Importers demand Port Harcourt overhaul
01 Nov 2006
Nigerian importers have asked the federal government to make immediate changes to the management of Port Harcourt.
They claim that a task force appointed to manage operations has used its position to extort money from users. As a result, companies located in nearby Nnewi have switched to using facilities at Apapa port.
They explained that since last year, when the task force went into Port Harcourt, the delay in clearing containers has lengthened con- siderably, while some goods have been seized and auctioned without any tangible reason being given. It now takes up to three months to clear goods from the port, whereas only three to four days are needed at Apapa.
