Guayaquil modifies concession terms
01 Nov 2006
There has been a change in terms and conditions attached to the concession to operate the port of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The future operator will now be allowed to hold a minimum stake of 51%, rather than the 70% asked for previously. The change was the result of consultation with potential bidders, all of whom lobbied for the reduction.
Among those interested in the concession are the Transagent consortium, Inversiones Cosmos/ HHLA, SAAM, ICTSI and the AGCWilport consortium. In addition, Corporación América and Empresas Navieras are interested in participating as investors, but not operators.
The concession will be for 20 years and require investment of $110m. The container terminal at the port, which handled 117,000 teu last year, is expected to benefit from privatesector know-how. The concessionaire will also have the option of investing in other port authority projects, such as the Guayas Free Zone.
