GOVERNMENT CHASES SANTOS CONTROL

The government of the state of São Paulo has requested that the central government cedes control of the port of Santos to it. However, any transfer must be free of the €288m ($383m) debt that the port currently has.

South Carolina State Ports Authority has extended an agreement with Savi Networks to introduce the company’s information service to three further container terminals at the Port of Charleston.The radio frequency identification (RFID) infrastructure installation aims to “automate visibility of RFID-sealed containers”.

$1.5bn reserved for Panamanian ports

Panama’s Ministry of Commerce has indicated that planned investment of $1.5bn over the next eight years will effectively double national port capacity. In all, $200m will be used to expand the port of Balboa, while PSA has announced additional investment to build a new facility at Rodman.

Everglades sister act

Port Everglades has launched an International Sister Seaports program to encourage information-sharing relationships. The port reports that it has already registered interest from the Port of Olbia, located on the Italian island of Sardinia, and Shanghai,China over the past year.

NY-NJ wants in on DP World profit

The New York-New Jersey port authority has asked DP World for a "transaction or transfer fee", amounting to as much as $84m, as part of the $450m sale of former P&O ports assets in the state, news reports have claimed. But DP World spokesperson Mohammad Sharaf said: "They are asking for a sum which is unreasonable and we are saying no."

New tender for Guayaquil

The government of Ecuador has not ruled out launching a new tender for the concession to run the port of Guayaquil, while in the meantime it has commenced restructuring of the port authority both there and in the cities of Manta, Esmeraldas and Puerto Bolívar. Guayaquil, it is argued, needs a strategic partner – similar to HPH’s involvement at the port of Manta - to fund the investment needed in both infrastructure and equipment.

Chile for China?

Doubts have been cast on the effectiveness of using Chilean ports to export goods from South America's Atlantic coast to destinations in Asia. In part, this is because export cargo from Uruguay and Argentina is not as important as was previously thought.
