Riding the Malaysian transhipment wave
01 Apr 2007
Ports in Malaysia posted a 12% volume increase last year in containers with a total of 13.6m teu handled, compared with 12m teu in 2005.
Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) now accounts for one third of total box traffic, while 50% of all containers handled in Malaysia are transhipped.
Transhipment centres such as PTP and Westport (+30%) performed notably better than import-export ports such as Northport (+1%), Penang and Johor. Malaysia’s Industrial Development Authority believes that it will be possible to boost national port traffic from the 250m tonnes registered in 2005 to 750m tonnes by 2020.
