Nigerian dockworkers take on Maersk

Dockworkers belonging to the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria have commenced industrial action in protest over claimed anti-labour practices implemented by private-sector terminal operators.

They point to an absence of conditions of service, an unbearable working environment and the refusal to allow unions to operate on the waterfront. The ports, they say, performed better under the Nigerian Ports Authority.

At the AP Moeller terminal in Lagos a significant backlog of uncleared containers has built up. This, claims the secretary-general of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, clearly indicates that the company cannot handle the volume of traffic at the port.

He suggests it should have used local operators of bonded warehouses to solve the problem.
