New mega-port for São Paulo state

A $3bn project to build a mega-port between the coastal cities of Peruíbe and Itanhaém in Brazil's São Paulo State has been put forward by entrepreneur Eike Batista, who controls the MMX mining company.

The port, to be known as Porto Brasil, is planned to open the 2011, but will have to first clear some difficult environmental hurdles.

It will have draught of 18 metres compared with a 14 metre limit at the existing port of Santos.

The facility will be based around an artificial island built some 3 km-3.6 km from the coast, where 11 berths will be constructed.

The port, which will require brand new road and rail infrastructure, will handle minerals, grain, containers and ethanol.
