Morocco approves Tangier 2

The Moroccan government has approved construction of a second port adjacent to the existing one at Tangier Med, where three additional container terminals will be built.

These will be located to the west of the current port and have 2,500 metres of berthing line. Capacity will be 5m teu/year, giving the port an overall capacity of 8.5m teu capacity. Investment of $1.7bn will be required, of which half will be sourced from the private sector. Work will begin in the second half of 2008 for scheduled opening in 2012.

A contract worth $200.5m has already been awarded to a joint-venture consisting of Bouygues, Saipem and Bymaro to undertake the initial infrastructure built. This consists of two dykes, an access channel and quays.
