Busan dredging need confirmed

A feasibility study on dredging at Korea’s Busan port has verified the need for deepening at selected berths at Shinsundae Container Terminal, Gamman Container Terminal, Shingamman and Jasungdae.

However, the report acknowledged that because of the “huge budget” required for dredging at other container terminals, further feasibility analysis would need to be undertaken before any commitment on terminals is made.

The cost for any dredging will be jointly covered by Busan Port Authority and terminal operators. Dredging to a depth of 16m is expected to cost KWR28.5bn ($31m) and will only have economic feasibility if the Shinsundae Container Terminal attracts more than 50,000 teu annually, and the Gamman Container Terminal 22,000 teu on completion of the dredging, according to the report.
