Malaysia’s Northport expands facilities

Port Klang’s Northport has introduced a €110m ($148.1m) expansion programme, which aims to boost container handling capacity, in addition to that of other cargoes. Investment will take place over the next three years, funding development of a new 350 metre long container berth, which will bring to 3,600 metres the total berthing length in the port for containers.

The programme also includes the acquisition of new quayside lift capable of handling super-post-panamax ships. These will complement the recent arrival of three super-post-panamax gantry cranes, which will be added to the existing complement of 24. Also on the shopping list are 12 straddle carriers, 12 rubber-tyred gantries, three reach stackers and assorted forklift trucks. The approach channel will also be dredged from 11.3 metres 13 metres; this will allow Northport to accommodate vessels of up to 8,500 teu.
