Record-breaking energy farming

Approval for planned wind farms off the UK’s Kent coast could put the Port of Ramsgate at the centre of the new development. The London Array, the world’s largest wind farm project, will consist of 341 turbines situated between Margate and Clacton.

A smaller project of 100 turbines, by Warwick Energy, will be seven miles off North Foreland.

Ramsgate’s owner,Thanet District Council, has been in discussions with the London Array developers about setting up a construction and operating base at the port.

However, the Port of London Authority (PLA) voiced strong opposition to the giant London Array wind farm, on navigational grounds. Consultants carried out an in-depth risk assessment study and the PLA says this confirmed its concerns. The light effects of the proposed wind farm and ways of mitigating these are being discussed with Trinity House Lighthouse Service and the Department for Transport. It has also been agreed that the wind farm’s developers should fund the provision of an additional radar.
