Libra moots Santos investment increase
01 Mar 2007
The Libra Group, Brazil's leading port container operator, is looking to invest $12m in Terminal 37 at the port of Santos, which would also involve the acquisition of two quayside gantry cranes, each of which would cost $6m. In 2006, Libra ploughed $23m into the terminal in the form of two ship-toshore gantry cranes and seven rubbertyred gantries.
As a group, Libra also operates other container terminals in the ports of Rio and Imbituba, whose combined 940,000 teu throughput was 5.3% higher than in 2005.
Nevertheless, before making additional investment in Santos, the Group wants to make a more accurate study of the Brazilian market, and also wants the port authority to undertake dredging of its fifth berth to allow a draught of 12.5 metres. This berth is not currently used because of draught restrictions. In 2006,the Santos terminal reported throughput of 750,000 teu, up 4.8%,but this was below expectations, which had been for growth of at least 15%.
