Germany Regional Feature

Changing tide of German opinion

Few now appear to doubt the future strategic importance of what will be Germany’s only deep-water container terminal: the idea, once scoffed at, appears to have literally grown on Germans.

JadeWeserPort (JWP) was conceived as Germany’s answer to Rotterdam, which many long believed was preordained to become Europe’s only mega ship hub – with German and other ports relegated to subsidiary feeder status.

Supporters now believe that long after Bremen/Bremerhaven and Elbe have become feeder hubs, the JWP will not only secure Germany’s direct round-the-world services but also cement busy feeder routes in the Baltic and Eastern Europe.

Recalling it is just a year since the JWP operating concession went to Eurogate and noting double-digit container growth rates, Lower Saxony Economics Minister Walter Hirche declares: “Germany's seaport infrastructure needs this terminal”. It is, he says,“of crucial importance”.
