Dar es Salaam told to clean up its act
01 May 2007
Tanzania’s prime minister recently made a surprise visit to Dar es Salaam port following increasing problems with congestion. He met with officials and private terminal operators, after which he instructed both the port authority and revenue authority to work 24 hours-a-day until congestion had been reduced.
Much of the problem at the port is linked to cargo clearance delays, as well as to poor road and rail infrastructure. As a result, many freight forwarders prefer to use Mombasa, since Kenya’s road network is superior to that of Tanzania’s.
The Association of Tanzania Maritime Agents has called for the private sector to introduce off-dock storage facilities for containers as a means of reducing congestion.
