Grain monopoly at Mombasa

A master plan covering the next 25 years, which was put together by Kenya Port Authority and approved by the government, proposes to concentrate bulk grain handling at a single terminal at Mombasa until at least 2028.
The plan, drawn up by consultants Haskoning and Kenya’s MA Consulting Group, points out that the present terminal operated by incumbent bulk handler GBHL is currently working well below maximum capacity.
In fact, the terminal has an 85,000 tonnes storage capacity and potential throughput ceiling of 2m tonnes a year. GBHL has sought to extend its existing concession by up to 20 years.
