Biometrics question safety at US ports

A Federal programme aimed at improving maritime security in the US may well result in up to one million port personnel having to undergo additional background checks and obtain biometric identification cards.

Strangely, these new credentials will only supplement existing security passes and clearances, which are leading some to suggest that earlier security checks may not be as secure as  they first appeared.

The so-called Transportation Worker Identification Credential programme will be implemented by all US seaports by August 2008. Stevedores, truck drivers, security guards and other dockside personnel will all be included.
