The facility will be a state-of-the-art centre for the port's security division, security units from the Long Beach Police and Port of Los Angeles, Coast Guard, Marine Exchange and U.S. Customs and border protection.

Speaking at the ceremony, Long Beach mayor Bob Foster said: “These two ports are the nation’s ports. This Control Command Center will be essential to our security.”

Captain Paul E Wiedenhoeft, commander of the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles/Long Beach, added: “We face a very persistent enemy, but we are well on our way to making this port secure.”He also pointed to the merits of a common operating procedure.
