Kalmar moves ahead with hybrid technology project

Port equipment specialist Kalmar has signed up for another US clean air initiative, this time on the US East Coast.

Kalmar will contribute to a two-year project aimed at lowering emissions by supplying hybrid terminal tractors, as well as research and development related to the project.

The units incorporate a diesel-hydraulic system that combines the cleanest available diesel engine technology with components that use hydraulic fluid compression to store energy.

Kalmar expects the hybrid technology will improve fuel efficiency by up to 60%.

Working with the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, APM Terminals, Parker Hannifin Corporation and the Port of Rotterdam, Kalmar hopes to push the commercial viability of hybrid terminal tractors with this initiative.
