Colombian barge phase-out challenged

A change in the law means that Colombian coal terminals will have to undertake direct transfers to vessels rather than using barges as from 2010.

However, Drummond, a major player in this market, says it will be difficult to meet the deadline.

The changes have been introduced on environmental grounds, despite the fact that operators insist that barges remain the most cost-effective solution to loading deep-sea vessels.

Meanwhile, the Colombian government has refused permission to build a new coal port at Barú, a decision partly influenced by lobbying from the tourist sector, which believes that additional coal loading facilities will detract from the local environment.
