Liverpool pioneers green canal shuttle

UK supermarket chain Tesco has made use of the England’s extensive canal network to transport supplies from the Port of Liverpool to Manchester.

Port of Liverpool has harnessed its canal network to take pressure off roads

Wine bound for Tesco supermarkets is flowing up the Manchester Ship Canal in the Peel Ports’ Liverpool-Manchester Shuttle, operated by a tug pushing a barge capable of carrying up to 160 20ft containers.

The novel transhipment service will sail three times a week from the Mersey to the heart of the North West Region transporting cargoes offloaded by deepsea shipping services at Liverpool’s Royal Seaforth Container Terminal.

On its return run, the Shuttle is expected to carry an increasing volume of export cargo plus repatriated empty containers for transfer to deepsea shipping services out of the Port of Liverpool.
