TT Club demands compulsory dangerous goods training
31 Oct 2007
Specialist transport insurer TT Club has called for mandatory International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code training for shore-side handlers.
Speaking at an International Maritime Organisation sub-committee on Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers (DSC), TT Club argued that the consequences of badly packed, mis-declared and inaccurately labelled hazardous cargoes in terms of loss of life, damage to vessels and destruction of goods continues to be at unacceptable levels.
In support of TT Club’s case, Mr Storr-Fox pointed to industry figures that show that between 5% and 10% of an average containership’s payload is made up of declared hazardous goods. On the super post-panamax 8,500 teu vessels plying the Asia-Europe trade that means the contents, of upwards of 600 containers is declared hazardous. At conservative estimates that equates to 8,000 tonnes per ship.
