Ngqura looks to private sector

Private sector companies look set to be asked to participate in the development of two new container terminals at the South African port of Ngqura costing €809m ($1.1bn).

This could be in the form of direct investment or through a contribution of their expertise in the sector.

If pursued, this proposal marks a stark change in thinking, as it has been commonly assumed that Transnet Port Terminals, previously South African Port Operations, would be the operator of the new deep-water facilities.

While it appears that Transnet Port Terminals will still play a role, the inclusion of a private operator is viewed as a positive development by industry insiders.

The terminals are due to open in 2009, with an initial capacity of 3m teu rising eventually to 4m teu.
