GPA supports Savannah growth

Buoyed by record container movements, Georgia Port Authority has announced a swathe of infrastructure improvements, equipment purchases and personnel additions at its Port of Savannah.

GPA is to add three additional interchange lanes at Garden City Terminal container Gates 3 and 4, increase operating personnel, assemble additional rubber-tyred gantry cranes and is making use of 30 additional acres of container storage that were recently put into operation at the Garden City Terminal. Additionally, RAM is currently manufacturing four separating twinlift spreaders for the same terminal.

The Port of Savannah handled 2.3m teu in fiscal 2007, a 14.5% increase over last year. ”We are on track to triple our container capacity at the Port of Savannah,” said Stephen S Green, chairman of GPA’s Board of Directors. During the last ten years, throughput has increased from 697,259 in FY1997 to 2.3m in FY2007, a 235% increase.
