Mombassa ends Dar transit cargo

Mombassa Port has temporarily stopped handling transhipment cargo bound for Dar es Salaam in an attempt to reduce congestion at the Kenyan port.

It is hoped the move will free up space in Mombassa container terminal, allowing it to handle more imports. Significantly, for every 1,500 containers passing through Mombassa, 1,000 find their way to Dar es Salaam.

In related news, several members of Parliament in Tanzania have complained that despite a modernisation programme costing $40.5m, little has changed at the port of Dar es Salaam. They therefore argue that granting Tanzania International Container Terminal Services a 15-year concession extension makes little sense.
