WCO wants African ports privatisation

Michel Danet, secretary general of the World Customs Organisation, speaking recently in Africa, recommended that the continent’s seaports be privatised so that they can meet international standards and cope with big changes currently sweeping the industry.

He stressed the need to clear customs procedures as quickly as possible and hinted that those ports that were unable to do so would disappear.

On the flipside, he praised ports in Accra and Dakar for improving their performance, noting that Ivory Coast is struggling to upgrade itself.
