Mexico five-port plan too little, too late
18 Mar 2008
As part of a $2bn investment programme, Mexico has confirmed plans to build five new ports in 2007-2012 to add to the existing 16 major hubs.
Those planned are Punta Colonet ($1bn), Manzanillo II ($513m), Veracruz II ($345m), Seybaplaya ($46m) and Moreles ($65m).
However, Mexico's National Association of Port and Maritime Terminals has criticised existing port infrastructure claiming it has been neglected over the last few years, and now many ports are unable to accommodate the latest generation of deep sea vessels.
The association's president recently demanded the government urgently increase investment in infrastructure spending for existing ports.
According to the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine, $840m will be invested this year in Mexican ports. Of this, $280m will be public money and the rest sourced from the private sector.
