Peruvian privatisation plan unveiled

Peru's Transport and Communications Minister, Verónica Zavala, has announced that the ports of Pisco, Pucallpa, Iquitos and Paita will be offered for concessions between July and September this year. The government will provide matching investment in both Pucallpa and Iquitos, she said.

When privatised, Iquitos, Paita, San Martín and Ilo will require respectively $18m, $290m, $10m and $100m of investment.

In the fourth quarter, Salaverry, Chimboté and Yurimaguas are also slated for privatisation, requiring respective investment of $40m, $61m and $20m.

Yet to be given a privatisation timetable is Pucallpa, which will require investment of $90m. Overall $550m will be invested in Peruvian ports.

Interest in the privatisation process has already come from operators in Russia, Malaysia and Singapore.

The programme can now go ahead after the Peuvian government agreed to pass a law allowing the upgrading and modernisation of Peru's National Port Authority (Enapu). Local industry believes that these moves will improve the competitiveness of port terminals, with Callao, which serves the capital Lima, benefiting in particular.
