Rio Tinto’s Uruguay connection

The Rio Tinto mining company is to build a port in western Uruguay where it will dispatch iron ore from mines at Corumbá, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. This will require investment of $205m.

The port will be situated on the banks of the Uruguay river at Agracaida, some 260 km northwest of Montevideo. Once operational, the facility will handle 20m tonnes of ore and iron and steel products, which will be dispatched by barge. Construction is slated to begin in the second half of this year and work is estimated to take 24 months.
