Prince Rupert revitalised by bulk demand

The rejuvenation of the port of Prince Rupert continued apace in 2007 with throughput climbing to 10.6m tonnes, up 237% since 2005 on the back of strong Pacific demand for Canadian coal, petcoke and agricultural products.

Ridley Terminals saw volumes rise by over 85% to 5.09m tonnes in last year following the opening of a wood pellet export facility and the commencement of coking coal shipments from Alberta.

Coal exports via the port increased by 89% year-on-year to 4.4m tonnes in 2007 with continued growth projected for 2008 as new mines come on stream in northern British Columbia.

Throughput at Prince Rupert Container Terminal, which opened in October and handled 16,703 in the final two months of 2007, will also increase further during 2008, according to a port authority spokesman. "Our focus now is to achieve full utilisation of the 500,000 teu facility and complete the groundwork to begin the construction of Phase 2 of the Prince Rupert Container Terminal by early 2009."
