Environment: Reducing Energy Costs

Energy capture to fuel Russian port

As part of its expansion plans, Russia’s National Container Company has ordered 19 energy-efficient rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes, to meet an anticipated annual capacity of 9m teu.

The new cable reel RTG cranes are viewed by the NCC as an important breakthrough in environmentally-friendly solutions for the Baltic area because the units reduce local emissions by 95%. Electric powered, they are fitted with regenerative units so that any excess energy can be fed back to the grid. The cable reel technology is of modular design and can be installed on the crane at a later stage.

As the new technology is expected to increase throughput capacity and improve productivity, NCC plans to take delivery of a further 31 units in total investment worth $1.7bn.
