Dredging dearth undermines Brazilian harvest

The legislative assembly of the Brazilian state of Paraná has been told that if dredging work on the access channel at the Port of Paranagua is not completed rapidly, it will seriously prejudice the state's ability to export both this year's and next year's harvests.

The project has been under discussion for the last five years.

The Galheta Channel theoretically allows ships drawing up to 12.5 metres of water to access the port, although currently the draught has had to be restricted to 11.3 metres because of silting.
