VICT boosts capacity

Vietnam’s first purpose-built container port is increasing its berthing space by a more than a third.

The common-user Vietnam International Container Terminal, a joint venture between NOL, Mitsui and the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport, is adding 192 metres to its existing 486 metres of berths.

After completion in September 2008, the planned throughput will be 900,000 teu and the terminal will be able to handle four ships simultaneously.

Joseph Wann Shang Jye, general director of Vietnam International Container Terminal, said: “We estimated 15% increase in throughput in 2008, but it looks like it will be closer to 20%.”
