Productivity gains on the back of software introduction

If you look back over the last 50 years, the introduction of software to monitor productivity has definitely been one of the major advances in helping to improve it, says Associated British Ports' Danny Carmichael.

The availability of radio frequency links means that virtually anything nowadays can be tracked in real time. As a result, data can be extracted from the system and presented in a variety of formats.

On the downside, he says, this data can also be manipulated. Some terminals could therefore theoretically suggest they are achieving productivity levels over and above the reality on the ground. The quantity and diversity of data available to terminal managers is quite astonishing, he adds.
