Container backlog cleared
16 Jun 2008
Mombasa has finally come to terms with the container backlog brought about by civil disturbances earlier in the year. From having 19,000 containers requiring processing in January, the figure had fallen to 9,000 by the end of April. Storage capacity in the terminal is in the region of 14,000 containers
Despite the urgent need for more capacity, legal technicalities are preventing any progress on the construction of the new container terminal at the port.
It seems that the National Assembly has yet to give its approval to the government to accept a $320m loan from Japan to finance the work.
