12 Jun 2008
Bids have been invited by Chennai Port Trust to build and operate India's largest ever container terminal.
Located on the east coast, the proposed terminal will have an engineered capacity of 4m teu/year.
The terminal will be able to handle vessels of up to 15,000 teu thanks to draft of 18 metres. The same facility will be able to accommodate very large crude carriers allowing it to be used as a deep draft oil berth. The estimated cost of the development, which will be operated as a 30-year concession, is put at $750m.
