Yangtze trade surges to new high

China's Yangtze River container volumes rocketed 38% in 2007 on the back of booming trade, a new study has found.

Yangtze Transport 2008, published by Yangtze Business Services, reports that both Taicang and Nanjing broke the 1m teu mark in 2007. Container traffic volumes on the Yangtze River now stand at a record high of 5.54m teu.

Figures show that the Yangtze trunkline stood at 918m tonnes, up 16.6% from the previous year. Of the 5.54m teu that the Yangtze ports recorded in 2007, 44.5% was related to domestic trade and 55.5% to foreign trade.
