Vycon validates potential fuel savings
06 Jun 2008
Vycon has published fuel saving test results from its flywheel energy storage system in a new paper.
The paper, released in conjunction with Yantian International Container Terminal in China, and Hong Kong's Hutchison Port Holdings, provides ports with validated data allowing operators to ascertain costs and benefits on both retro-fit and new crane applications.
A summary of testing in the paper reveals fuel savings ranging from 8% to 15% with the addition of the Regen system to the standard rubber-tyred gantry crane. When using a smaller diesel genset in conjunction with the Regen system, the fuel saving increased to between 32% and 37%.
The energy storage system works by capturing the regenerated energy from the hoist cycle, resulting in considerable fuel savings under various operating conditions.
