US ports must prepare for Panama traffic

Panama Canal executive Rodolfo Sabonge has stressed the need for US ports to be ready for “larger and bigger” ships on the back of the Canal expansion work currently underway.

Speaking at a Canal expansion workshop in Florida, vice president of Research and Market Analysis Mr Sabonge said that the expansion will create a “new lane of traffic along the waterway greatly influencing world trade and US ports in particular.

“These ports should be ready for larger and bigger ships that will go through the expanded Canal – anticipating the infrastructure needs in the near future is key to their growth,” he said.

The expansion project will add a new lane of traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks, which will double capacity and allow more traffic and wider ships.
