Insurance: Marine Construction Risk

Reducing the risks

There is a host of ways to reduce the risks and provide insurers with a higher level of comfort, says Brian Elliot at Marsh. Ports and their contractors should consider:

● Use of tried and tested methods of construction;

● Setting up a link to the local meteorological office for daily weather reports and early warnings of storm or severe weather;

● Drawing up clear contingency plans for withdrawing and sheltering floating plant and securing works – before the storm hits, if possible;

● Scheduling work to minimise exposure during the storm season, and keeping unprotected construction works to a minimum;

● Ensuring a clear marine and non-marine interface;

● Making sure insurers are happy with the project manager;

● Being able to demonstrate the experience, technical knowledge and ability to work together of the team in respect of design, procurement and construction – at individual, team and corporate level.
