Privatisation backlash sweeps through Chile
30 Apr 2008
Shipping agents and port workers in Chile have stoutly rejected any new port privatisations in the country.
They claim that privatisations will create monopolies and consequently result in a loss of employment.
Shipping agents instead propose boosting the existing multi-operator model in terminals. In all, 86.5% of Chilean ports with more than nine metres of draught are currently operated as 20-30 year concessions.
For their part, port workers want concessions at the ports of Valparaiso and San Antonio to be issued at the same time as a means of protecting jobs. However, they totally reject the latest round of government port concessions.
