Tarragona eyes international operator

Josep Anton Burgasé, president of Tarragona Port Authority, has confirmed he is keen to tap in on the huge growth potential for containers at his port, but has yet to find a workable solution.

Hutchison, PSA and DP World have all expressed interest in operating a terminal at the port, but with one operator already in the port the Tarragona president believes that two terminals would be one too many.

He has suggested that one solution would be for the existing operator, Contarsa, to seek an alliance with a global operator, although other options are also being considered. Speaking to journalists, Mr Burgasé welcomed the port's 285% increase in container throughput last year to 47,000 teu.
