Finland mega port project opens for business
03 Nov 2008
Touting itself as the “most modern of the Baltic harbours”, Finland’s massive port relocation project is to open this month.
The E470m Vuosaari Harbour project will sweep up cargo operations from the existing city centre North and West Harbours, which are constrained by the surrounding city.
With two 750m container quays, 15 ro-ro berths, and anticipated traffic of 4,000 vehicles per day, the port describes the Vuosaari gate area as the “nerve centre” of the new harbour.
IT specialist Visy has provided its Access Gate product for access and area control, traffic guidance, and automated gate procedures for people, vehicles, and cargo, alongside its Terminal Gate product for damage inspection imaging and data collection.
The systems incorporate optical character recognition for license plate recognition and container code identification, and radio frequency identification for personnel and port equipment.
Vuosaari port authority, customs, and all operators - Finnsteve, Steveco, and Multi-Link Terminals – will use Visy solutions.
