Kochi copes with congestion
24 Sep 2008
If a container is left in the stacking yard at the port of Kochi for more than 15 days, it will now automatically be moved to a private container freight station as a congestion-busting measure.
At one stage, the container terminal was accommodating 50% more boxes than theoretically possible.
Shipping lines are against the move, because it implies additional costs.
Furthermore, documents pertaining to import containers stipulate the port of entry, which means they should not be moved to any other facility outside the port limits. Nor would they be covered for damage under existing insurance policies, shipping lines advise.
