Security: Container X-Ray Systems

Smiths expands production

Smiths Detection opened a high-tech production plant at Wiesbaden in Germany in July this year, to meet “soaring global demand” for its advanced X-ray scanning machines – these are principally for airport security but also used to support border checkpoint security.

New developments from Smiths recently have included high-energy gantry systems with material discrimination and integrated radiation detection, and pass-through systems providing high throughput capabilities.

Material discrimination combined with high energy provides the new ability to distinguish organic from inorganic material, says a spokesman. Gamma and neutron detection combined with X-ray inspection is offering an automatic process in a one-pass, fully integrated system.
