For Wampfler, the most important challenge for the future will be manufacturing the cable in a short time – allowing more flexibility in projects and demanding more flexibility in the supply chain, production and logistics. The firm’ s Michael Ibarth says Wampfler is experiencing strong demand for flexible cables.
This is not just because of the boom in the ports sector, he says, but also because of the increasing power requirements that lead to bigger cross-sections for motor cables and more demands in data transmission that has boosted the sales of fibre optic and other bus cables.
Added to which, the “extreme use” of the port equipment, which sometimes limits cable lifetime to 2,000 hours, is increasing the demand for retrofits.
